The community basics

For Swap Family an exchange is any shared cultural / educational experience between members of the community.

We offer three types of exchanges:

  • Reciprocal exchange: both members are host and guest to each other.
  • Host family: you welcome a member in your home.
  • Guest family: you stay in another member’s home.

Reasons to become a member

Because it is an adventure, it is all about discovering and opening up to the world.

You’ll experience first hand the culture of the person you welcome in your home, which will help broaden your horizons  while showing your guests your own culture.

It will change the way you see your day-to-day life. It will change your set routines and dynamics, and will help create new interactions and spaces.

If you have kids, they will learn to share, engage, accompany and support others like them.

Because cultural and language immersion is the best way to learn a foreign language.

Because family life is the perfect setting to adapt and learn naturally.

Because the experience is a chance to evolve and grow personally, e.g., become independent, self-confident.

Because it is the way the complete and cement a relationship.

Because we care about the safety and peace of mind of our members. Swap Family invites and gives you the opportunity to be an accredited member.

Who is part of the community

Exchanges are allowed at any age. From 0 to 99.

All registered members can be involved in an exchange with Swap Family. It’s all about reaching an agreement with your exchange partner.

Do you have a month-old baby? Would you like to share your experience with a foreign family in a similar situation? Do you have a 9-year old daughter who is not yet ready to engage in an exchange experience on her own? Why not accompany her?

From the age of 12, kids become more independent and can engage in exchanges on their own, however each kid is different and any age can be suitable. You can accompany your kids from very early on and share the experience with them.

All registered members can be involved in an exchange with Swap Family. It’s all about reaching an agreement with your exchange partner.

In fact we encourage you to come up with the types of exchange that will suit your interests…

Do you have a baby and want to go to Madrid for a month with her? Find a family that will welcome you who shares your interests… Would you like to welcome a parent and his kid in your home? Invite them over!… Do you think your kid is still too young to travel alone? Why not accompany your kid and enjoy together this life, language and cultural experience?

Because the world is full of opportunities. You’ll make new contacts that can become new friends and learn new cultures, see new places, experience different styles.

Because we all change and find new interests… maybe you are now totally into surf when last year you would have never thought of it…

At Swap Family we believe you are in the best position to arrange this experience. You know best your own characteristics and you are best qualified to choose the most suitable exchange partner to share experiences with.

Swap Family does not arrange the exchange. It is a platform that enables people/families to contact each other and arrange the exchange that will best suit their own needs and interests.

If you still want our help to complete the process, you can contact us using the contact form on the tab “Get in contact” at the site footer. We’ll answer you within 48 hours.

Member accreditation

Because safety is our and your priority.

Swap Family is a network with trust at its heart and we protect the safety of all our members. And so we invite and give you the opportunity to be an accredited member. Something that surely many of the members of the community will value.

Those interested in being accredited members must provide the information and accreditations we deem necessary (certificate of no criminal record, family record book and ID). Documentation that will be scrupulously reviewed by the Swap Family team.

During the registration process, you’ll be asked to submit a copy of the required accreditation documentation. The Swap Family team will review the documents submitted and your registration will be complete within 48 hours.

  • Adults/Tutors’ ID/Passport.
  • A copy of the child’s birth certificate (where appear the parents) in the case of registering minors. If you don’t have it you can request it at the city council of the child’s place of birth.
  • Adults/Tutors’ Disclosure and Barring Checks (DBS Checks).
  • If you’re not a national in the country where you live; Adults/Tutors’ Residence permit.

Once you send us the accreditation documents we will review them and if everything is correct, in 48 hours you will get the accredited member badge.

When, how, for how long...

You can do an exchange anytime that suits you. Just find an exchange partner to do an exchange with.

Possibilities are endless. These are just some examples

Your kids are spending three months in a student’s residence in the UK, why not spend a holiday week or a weekend with them staying with a local family? Can this local family then visit you at home and spend a few days with you?

You go abroad for a long weekend, why not use those few days to stay with an exchange partner? It will be a different experience.

Send your son to a summer camp together with your friendly family’s son.

You are traveling in another country and want to spend an afternoon or go out to dinner with people there … Take advantage and meet a member of the community!

Welcome a foreign kid in your home during the Christmas holiday.

You share a hobby with your exchange partner, both fascinated by photography. Why not take the opportunity to do a photography course together?  You will practice the language from your great hobby.

Take advantage of the half/mid-term holiday.

An exchange can last as long or as little as the members involved decide (3 days, 1 day, 1 month…).

Communication channels

You can communicate with the community members once you’ve registered on the platform.

The platform offers you a messaging system so you can initiate the contact, talk to others and stay in control of your interactions.

Also we encourage you to use other video / audio systems to complement and support your interactions.

You can reach  us by using the contact form on the tab Get in contact at the site footer. We’ll answer you within 48 hours.

Registration

To have access to information on community members, you need to register. At Swap Family we care about the safety of our members.

Members details are visible exclusively to community members.

The registration must be updated annually, when certain accreditations expire.

No. Signing up for Swap Family Community is completely free.

With Swap Family members do not charge or receive payment for their exchanges.

Contingencies

Swap Family advices members that, prior to any exchange, they communicate as much and for as long as they need. This will ensure that the exchange involves the most suitable partners and in the best possible conditions. The better you know the chosen partner, the higher the chances of a successful exchange.

Should the experience not be satisfactory, (doesn’t get used to the welcome member, does not accept the “rules” of the welcome member or the welcome member does not fulfill the original expectations as agreed), the tutors or adult member itself will arrange for his/her safe return with the help of the welcome family. Both together will solve the situation by themselves. The Swap Family team will be available should you need any advice or mediation.

Remember that Swap Family is a meeting point. We do not manage or arrange the exchanges –we help members get in contact with each other so they can reach their own agreements based on mutual trust.
